Library and sync concepts

Skills Hub installs a Skill into a central library, then distributes it to the AI tools you select. Keep the following locations and operations separate.

Three locations

LocationPurposeExample
Original sourceSupplies content for installation and later updatesA Git repository or a local folder you selected
Central libraryStores the Skill managed by Skills Hub~/.skillshub by default
Tool directoryMakes the Skill available to an AI toolThe tool's global or project Skills directory

Default central library path:

~/.skillshub

You can move the library in Settings. Do not add Skill folders directly to the central library or replace the import flow with manual copying. The app also needs to record the source, tags, and tool targets.

A local source folder is different from its managed library record. If you delete the original folder, later source updates cannot read it. Use the migration operation in Settings to change the library location.

Four different operations

  • Install adds a Skill from a source to the central library.
  • Distribute to tools makes the library content available to selected tools on this computer. Some desktop controls call this operation sync.
  • Update a Skill checks or retrieves changes from its recorded source, then updates the corresponding tool targets.
  • Device sync exchanges Skill content, descriptions, and tags between computers through a sync repository.

An app update installs a new version of Skills Hub itself. It does not replace Skill source updates.

Global and project scope

Global scope uses the tool's user-level Skills directory. Project scope uses a directory inside the project you select. The library still retains the managed content. Project scope does not move the only copy into the project.

Tools differ in their scope support. Windows currently supports global distribution only. See Distribute to AI tools.

Tags and status

Tags organize the library. They do not automatically select tool targets. Deleting a tag does not delete the Skill.

A Skill can be installed in the library without any tool targets. It can also be available in some tools while distribution to another tool has failed. Treat source errors and tool errors separately. Open the details to inspect the affected source or target.

Disabling keeps library content and configuration. Deleting moves the Skill to the local recycle bin. See Delete and restore.
